Students and Scholars from Across the Region Gather for AUS Mathematics Conference

SHARJAH - Students and scholars from across the region attended the American University of Sharjah’s second AUS Regional Student Conference on Mathematics on Saturday, March 4. The conference, which was organised by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the College of Arts and Sciences, hosted several talks by students and keynote lecturers on the recent developments in mathematical research and education and covered topics such as algebra, differential equations, geometry, and financial mathematics. Undergraduates and graduates from the UAE and other neighbouring countries explored ideas within the different branches of mathematics. According to Head of the AUS Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Dr. Hania Sulieman, math is an “indispensable science” that supports innovation, research, and technology. “There is no better time than now to consider a career in mathematics and mathematical research as the world is becoming more technology-driven. A recent article published in Edarabia revealed that 40 percent of job roles will be lost to automation in just 25 years and six of the top 10 skills most sought-after among employers in UAE and the region included statistics, mathematics and computer science. We are committed to helping our students be well prepared for innovation-led tomorrow,” she said. The first AUS Regional Student Conference on Mathematics was held in 2014, with the aim of promoting mathematics in the UAE, and the region. “Through stimulating keynote lectures and many interesting contributed presentations, this conference provides students with an opportunity to discover more of mathematics and its important applications that are not covered in the classroom,” said Dr. Sulieman.
